The De La Salle Green Archers fought hard to gain a berth in Final 4, but now it’s time for them to sweep off Ateneo Blue Eagles in the knockout semi final match of Filoil Flying Premier Cup schedule to start on Friday.
Green Archers defeated Far Eastern University with the score of 91-71 to hit an eighth straight victory followed by the semi-final face-off with Blue Eagles. Archers that are smashing goal under Coach Aldin Ayo trashed Eagles in their first meeting during the elimination round and grabbed a convincing victory with 98-66 score against them.
In their overthrow of Ateneo, rookie Ben Mbala gave Archers 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks while the maven forward Jeron Teng let 24 markers, 4 boards and 4 assists against Tamaraws squat that lost their final attempt in the UAAP title last season. Ateneans dropped 39 percent of shots while La Salle gave sank 43 percent.
After beating champion San Beda in the game of quarterfinals, the Chiefs came over National University side that were removed 2 years from winning the crown in UAAP. The Bulldogs lasted Chiefs with 68-65 during the elimination round face off that saw NU veteran center Matthew Aquino knock down the winning basket.
Arellano coach Jerry Codinera who guided the team for NCAA finals stretch 2 years back said –
“Hopefully, we have learned from our mistakes from our last meeting,”
Many important players have moved from the squad still Bulldogs have managed well in the playing amazing defensive in the tournament. Coach Altamirano believes his team has cemented their marks with defense and has also improved their offense.
We have made our mark with defense,” said Altamirano. “And it also spurs our offense.”
Although the spotlight this time is again on La Salle-Ateneo that demolished Eagles in the eliminations round with 98-66, Eagles will also try hard to break their defense.
