The San Sebastian College Stags outlasted the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 54-49, on Sunday in the start of the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball at the Arena in San Juan.
With Egay Macaraya as a new coach, San Sebastian gave him a favor by winning his first head coaching game.
Jerick Fabian delivered 12 points to lead the Stags. Regile Ilagan and Michael Calisaan each scored eight points for the Stags, after allowing their opponents to get back into the game in the final quarter.
The Stags were able to cope with the opponents rally through their defense in the final minutes as the kept their lead.
With the score of 52-49, Blazers have a chance to cut the lead but Edward Dixon missed his free throws with 46.6 left in the game. Dixon was given another chance after a lane violation comitted by the opposing team, but still he muffed the free shot.
The Stags controlled the boards with 47 and the Blazers got only 40 rebounds.
Coach Macaraya, who played for San Sebastian for two years in the 1980s, said fatigue entered in to his players and fortunately for them they held on to their lead.
