Import Allen Durham scored 32 points to lead the Meralco Bolts in a 108-103 win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters in the PBA Governor’s Cup opener at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday.
Durham had also 22 rebounds and five assists to dismantle the defense of Phoenix. Durham was active in both sides of the floor as he dominated the boards. The Bolts allowed the Fuel Masters to get back into the game but Durham found his way to completely overpower their opponents.
“I don’t want to call anybody a horse but he’s our thoroughbred. He’s a throw back to the old days. He can score, he can rebound, he’s a good teammate, he’s a willing passer,” said Black.
Jimmy Alapag and Jared Dillinger added 15 points each for Meralco. Alapag started with 4-for-5 shooting and added also six assists and three rebounds. In addition, Chris Newsome had 13 points while Cliff Hodge produced 12 points for the Bolts to get the maximum contributions from all their players.
The Fuel Masters tried to rally back their troops through Marcus Simmons who had 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Korean Import Hee Lee Gwan had seven points and five rebounds.
With the Fuel Masters be able to get back trailing 101-100 with 43 seconds left, the Bolts were able to find ways to deliver through Durham.
