Garcia plays big coming from the bench as Hotshots edge Batang Pier

Star Hotshots overwhelmed Globalport Batang Pier, 105-102, in overtime to start their winning streaks in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, 24th July.

Back from two loss, Star Hotshots looked quite firm and crisp in their moves. Taking a good lead in the initial quarter, Batang Pier hardly missed any chance to score. However, the match tied at 102-all with 47 seconds left in the given overtime, RR Garcia hit the game winning basket at the end to lift Star Hotshots towards win.

Not just that, Garcia put forward a terrifying performance by scoring 20 points on 11-for-13 shooting. 8 points out of 26 came in the extra period to lead the team also the shot that tied the match in the end.

Star Coach Jason Webb said for Garcia after the game:

“The game plan was simple: score more points than the opponents,”
“We wanted to start a little better but we can’t seem to start the conference right. We’re still alive even if we started poorly. Mas masarap kesa sa talo; it just feels like yung bola, it doesn’t seem to fall and we have to get over it. I hope this turns things around.”

Import from University of Vermont, Marqus Blakely proved beneficial for the team, notching 24 points, 22 rebounds both from offensive and defensive ends, 6 assists, 5 steals and 1 block. PJ Simon contributed 15 points off the bench, out of which 3 points came from the 4th quarter exactly when the team need high-looping score of 90 with 16.7 seconds remaining.

Terrence Romeo chipped 27 points and new power forward import Mike Glover smashed 27 points and 12 rebounds in this PBA debut. Although Romeo went 9-of-23 in the field, missed the chance to take home victory in the when he lost the ball in the tough battle with Garcia in the end of regulation.
