Gilas Pilipinas suffered a 93-84 loss to France in the second game of the FIBA-Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Tuesday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Despite an early control lead of the game for Gilas, France managed to come back steadily through Nando de Colo with 27 points and NBA-star Tony Parker who scored 21 points. Colo was quietly making his starting in the second quarter when the game became tight. Furthermore, Parker’s leadership and his ability to drive into the basket destroy the defense of the Filipinos.
Andray Blatche scored 21 points for the Philippines but his numbers were not enough to beat France. Terrance Romeo scored 19 points while 3-for-5 shooting from outside the arc. Jeff Chan scored three 3-pointers but played for onle 14 minutes. Jayson Castro added 14 points for Gilas Pilipinas.
France shot 66 percent from the field while Gilas made 39.3 percent. France grabbed 38 rebounds compared to 36 of the Philippines. The big difference was in assists in which France had 18 while Gilas with only 11.
“[Gilas’ guards are] pretty good. They’re very aggressive. They tried to make things happen. They did pretty work,” the San Antonio Spurs star told reporters after the game.
Gilas will play New Zealand on Wednesday, hoping that they will get the win.
