Gilas Philippians isn’t an ordinary team and not to be taken lightly either. This is what the all-time leader of San Antonio Spurs, Tony Parker believes when the team is set to clash in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Tuesday.
For Philippine national men’s basketball team this is the last time to gain an elusive spot in the Rio Olympics 2016. Maybe that’s why veteran Tony Parker and team assistant coach Ruddy Nelhomme are pretty worried about Gilas using of 3-point shot as their main weapon before the showdown.
Parker in a statement said”
“We know it is a big part of their arsenal and they are very good at it, “If the Filipinos get hot from the outside it will open up the lane for Andray Blatche and those quick point guards of theirs. So we have to guard against that.”
While Nelhomme says “the Philippines is fast and you cannot underestimate them”. He is assisting France head coach Vincent Collet for a long-time and has seen Gilas performance against Turkey when the game ended with solid 84-76 win. Also Parker added that Philippine team that has FIBA Asia Mythical 5 basis Jayson Castro and massive scorer Terrence Romeo as “Fast and Talented.”
For team France, Parker is the undoubted leader of his squad. Batum and Diaw are also elite players and barely there is anybody that can match their level. Parker has severed his national team for 19 years and will be making his final tour of duty with this game. Beyond doubt, the 4-time NBA champion and multi-award winner will keep inspiring the team to gain France’s bid for Olympic berth.
Both teams are under Group B in FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament along with New Zealand. In Group A there are Canada, Senegal, and Turkey for the competition. Qualifying team will head for 2016 Rio Olympics starting August 5th.
