Governor’s Cup is starting on Friday but this time with a bang, when two powerful basketball teams Meralco and Phoenix hit the stadium to clash in the opening match of PBA Governor Cup 2016 at Smart Aranete Coliseum.
Phoenix Petroleum and Meralco Bolts will unfold the Season 41 with lot of hope and confidence. Meralco is looking to pick up from where they left in Commissioner’s Cup, while Phoenix is wants take a fresh start expecting to give 100% efforts for this opening match, as the first game is very important.
Meralco is already in good form after winning first five games of Commissioner’s cup and reached up to semi-finals, but just lost to Alaska in best-of-five series. Meralco Coach Norman Black believes –
“We just want to get off to a good start in this conference and at least match or surpass our performance last time out”.
Phoenix on other hand has a debuting coach Ariel Vanguardia who is confident about the team’s performance but wants his team to work on defense.
“We still need a lot of improvement, especially on defense,” said Vanguardia
Recently, both teams made slight changes to their rosters, Bolts acquired Jonathan Uyloan in exchange of Ronjay Buenafe in a one-on-one deal with Fuel Masters. Emilio Aquinaldo College standout joins hands with Phoenix which has some amazing players including rookies Simon Enciso and Mark Cruz also expert hitters Josh Urbiztondo and Chico Lanete.
Norman Black said the teams’ performance will totally rely on the performance of the swap made on the rosters, which coach Vanguardia also agrees.
Meralco now has Allen Durham (6-foot-4 ½) and Iranian Star Mohammad Jamshidi, both have displayed their efforts in their last matches. Phoenix is mostly relying on Marcus Simmons who played most of his carrier for Fort Wayne Mad Ants in NBA D-league.
It’s the first game for both teams, if we see the past the past performance Meralco has the ball in his court. However, adding lot of new players, Phoenix can turn the game around!
