Nambatac scores 29 for Letran to beat JRU

The Letran Knights rallied through Rey Nambatac, who exploded 15 of his game-high 29 points, in the fourth quarter to beat Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers, 67-62, in the NCAA Season 92 senior basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City on Thursday 28th July.

Rey Nambatac has been scoring high almost in all the game of NCAA 92, however after an unexpected loss to Perpetual Help 55-61 last week, Knights edge out Heavy Bombers and secured their 5th win (5-2) win-loss in 7 games.

The southpaw guard fired 29 points, five rebounds, and two steals, while he received full support from John Quinto in most-important payoff period scoring 12 points on 6-of-11 firing on field plus 4 assists. Also, John Calvo notched 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steal. Jom Sollano added four points, and 11 rebounds for Knights.

Nambatac turned hot to break 53-all tie with his 3-pointer moving Knights to 56-53 advantage. Then by notching 2 consecutive triples in that fourth crucial quarter he nailed another crashing trey with 44.5 seconds left to make it 65-60 after 2 blowing baskets from Paolo Pontejos. He then quietly drilled 2 free throws before the time was over to cement their 5th win in 7 outings. Heavy Bombers couldn’t match up to the speed of Knights till the last round was over.

Letran Head Coach Jeff Napa said:
“We did things as planned. We were able to correct our mistakes from our previous games,”

“At least, we did what we need to do and we stick to the game plan,” Napa added.

JRU’s lead player Paolo Pontejos chipped 27 points for the team. For the decisive fourth quarter he could fire only 4 points, as Heavy Bomber’ ended with 2-4 win-loss record for the season as of now.

Meanwhile, Davon Potts and Robert Bolick shined in a tough game as San Beda outlasted CJ Isit-less Mapua 85-75 on Thursday.
