Jameel McKay exploded with 42 points and 22 rebounds to help the Phoenix Fuel Masters in a 94-86 win over the powerhouse Alaska Aces in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the desire to win after losing two games in a row prior to this match, McKay started strong by registering 24 points and 17 boards in the first half alone. McKay’s aggressiveness throughout the ball game produced also two blocks and two steals to have an all-around performance.
Phoenix controlled most of the minutes of the game but there were moments that Alaska was trying to bounce back. Phoenix was able to maintain its stand after Alaska tied the game in the third quarter. However, the Fuel Masters reacted with 9-2 spurt and they never looked back. Cyrus Baguio scored 12 points to compliment the performance of the import while RJ Jazul had 10 points and eight assists to support his teammates.
It was evident that the Fuel Masters wanted the game more by winning the battle for the boards with 47-39.
Corry Jefferson led the way for Alaska with 31 points and 13 rebounds. JVee Casio scored 14 points while Sonny Thoss added eight points. Alaska had lost their second straight games.
