Jones Cup 2017 Schedule: Gilas faces Canada at the opener


One of the biggest international basketball tournaments Williams Jones Cup Invitational is scheduled to begin on 15th July 2017 and Gilas are hopeful to win the event for the 5th time by crushing their first opponent Canada in the opening game in Taipei.

Coach Chot Reyes has announced the roster for the game that will go on for 9 days ending on 23rd July. This year, Reyes has brought in Mike Myers, who played as a stand-in import in the Commissioner’s Cup for TNT KaTropa.

Along with Mike Myers the Philippines team is loaded with Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, Jio Jalalon, Mac Belo, RR Pogoy, Mike Tolomia, Carl Cruz, Raymar Jose, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, Matthew Wright, Von Pessumal, Fonso Gotladera, Almond Vosotros and Fil-German Christian Standhardinger.

Although the team has no PBA veterans, Paras and Ravena are beyond doubts are the finest talents in the comparatively novice team. The Gilas will clash with Taipei A, Taipei B, Japan, South Korea, Iraq, India and Iran after opening against Canada’s 3D Global Sports in what could be the title game on the 23rd.

Reyes who is the first Filipino coach to win the event said –

“This year’s Jones Cup field is tough. Nine games in nine days,”

Reyes with this team has a mission, one to win the Jones Cup and second to develop team chemistry for the SEA Games.

“We’re hitting two birds with one stone: we want to do a great job in the Jones Cup and want to give exposure to everyone in the pool competing against elite Asian-level competition,” Reyes added.
