Gilas Pilipinas shocks China in the FIBA Asia Cup

Terrence Romeo scored eight of his 26 points in the most important stretch of the game to help Gilas Pilipinas beat China,96-87, in the FIBA Asia Cup Wednesday in Beirut, Lebanon.

Romeo saved the day for the Philippines by his clutch shooting from inside and outside the arc in the final four minutes of the ballgame. After failing to maintain a 17-point lead, Gilas Pilipinas trailed 87-84 when Romeo tied the game at 87 then in the next possession made a difficult jumper to push it to 89-87 in their favor. To make things brighter, Romeo again hit a three-pointer to provide the Philippines a 92-87 cushion, enough to distance themselves against China.

Gilas Pilipinas started strong with a 7-0 lead and maintained it until the fourth quarter when China tightened the defense. However, Romeo weathered the rally and Gilas seized the victory to begin their journey to the promise land.

Christian Standhardinger had 15 points and six rebounds while Jayson Castro added 13 points and seven rebounds. Matthew Wrigth scored 12 points while Raymond Almazan added nine points, all in the second quarter.

Japeth Aguilar had five blocks while Gabe Norwood added 3.
