Atypical returns for a fourth and final season on Netflix in 2021. Here are all the details we know so far in season 4, including when production should start, what we can expect, and when it’s likely to hit Netflix.

Netflix’s thought-provoking, charming and well-received comedy has been a loser and a true gem for the past few years. The series focuses on the Gardner family and their trials throughout the years.

The series has been released in three seasons so far and the most recent, Season 3, released on Netflix in November 2019.

Has Atypical Been Renewed For Season 4?

Atypical’s renewal came in February 2020 when Deadline announced that the show had been renewed for one final season. Some have referred to this tactic as Netflix “re-canceling” a show. For fans, however, this is good as it allows creators to properly wrap up a show rather than leaving it open and unfinished.

Along with the renewal, we received a short clip confirming that it is the last season. In the caption, it says: “They have brought you laughter, tears, hugs and friends. Now see how the story ends.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Robia Rashid, who serves as showrunner, said:

I’m excited that we are going to do a season 4 of ‘Atypical’. Although I am sad that the end of the series is near, I am tremendously grateful to have been able to tell this story. Our fans are great and great defenders of the series. Thank you for being so open to the voice and stories of Sam and the entire Gardner family. I hope that the legacy of ‘Atypical’ is that there are more voices that stop being unheard and that even when the series ends, we continue to tell emotional and funny stories from misrepresented points of view.

Some members of the cast had mixed reactions.

Keir Gilchrist said on Instagram that he is “excited to close this story with all of you.”

Brigette Lundy-Paine posted a series of videos and photos from her time working on Atypical saying, “We’re doing 1 more season of Atypical !!!!!!! this program has brought me warmth, community and purpose and I hope it has done the same for you. We love them atypies, cazzie nation, Zam Fam, Penguinos, Delsa stans (and Nelsa stans), Paigers and Juliams.

Production Status For Atypical Season 4

At the beginning of March 2020, it was believed that production would begin sometime during the summer of 2020. Of course, reality prevailed preventing that from happening.

In October 2020, we learned through Production Weekly that Netflix now plans to film in Los Angeles in January 2021.

What To Expect From Atypical Season 4

As you can imagine, with a final season, we expect all the remaining plot threads to wrap up before the end of the 10th episode.

In Season 4, we’ll likely see a significant change in Casey’s life when he signs up with Coach Crowley to join UCLA after a convincing on-track victory. What that means for his current relationship with Izzie is not entirely clear, although they did appear compromised as the credits for season 3 episode 10 progressed.

As with Sammy, it looks like he’ll be spending the last season moving into an apartment with Zahid while keeping his job at the tech store.

Elsa and Doug appear to have patched up their marriage throughout season 3, but whether that will continue will likely be revealed in season four.

When Atypical Season 4 Will Be On Netflix?

At the moment, only a broad release date has been given for 2021. However, since the filming schedule is likely to conclude towards the end of 2020, it is more than likely that we will see the release of season 4 on Netflix in the first two quarters of 2021. That means between January 2021 and June 2021.

While we wait for season 4 of Atypical, we leave you with the bug roll and some behind-the-scenes footage for season 3 of the show, and take a look at some of our alternate series suggestions if you haven’t already.
