Rodrygo’s late strike against Inter Milan gave Real Madrid their first victory in the Champions League this season.

Champions League (2020-21): Real Madrid Finished a Streak of four winless matches in the Champions League after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Inter Milan at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Tuesday night.

The defeat leaves the Nerazzurri at the bottom of the table, staring at another early exit.

Rodrygo came off the bench to net the winner after Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic canceled out Real Madrid’s two-goal cushion from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos. The victory lifts Los Blancos around third in the Group B table with four points, tied with Shakhtar Donetsk. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri are condemned to the base of the table and are still without a win in the contest.

Samir Handanovic – 6.5/10

Samir Handanovic was the busier of the two goalkeepers at the night. Even though he was helpless on all 3 occasions that he conceded, he’d create four saves against Real Madrid, including some important ones to deny Benzema towards the end.

Danilo D’Ambrosio – 6/10

Danilo D’Ambrosio was well off the pace through Real Madrid’s counter-attacks and left plenty of gaps at the back. Vinicius easily conquer him while laying that cross for Rodrygo’s winner.

Stefan de Vrij – 6/10

This was another bad performance from Stefan de Vrij, that just has been stoop to a new playoff game after game. The Dutch center-back was easily defeated on several occasions and wasn’t restraining aerially either.

Alessandro Bastoni – 7/10

Alessandro Bastoni turned in another good shift at the back for the Nerazzurri, showing great composure when Real Madrid swarmed the area. The 21-year old made the most clearances in the game (three) and proved stronger in the air than some of his defensive counterparts.

Achraf Hakimi – 6/10

This was an opportunity for Achraf Hakimi to reveal Real Madrid what they’ve been missing however, he instead produced a bad performance. His cluttered backpass was punished by Benzema, and he was nowhere near his best while marauding forward.

Nicolo Barella – 7.5/10

This is a superb performance from Nicolo Barella, whose moves were challenging for the Real Madrid defense to deal with. He even assisted Martinez with an incredible backheel flick.

Marcelo Brozovic – 6.5/10

Marcelo Brozovic has been a calming presence in the midfield in an otherwise chaotic match. The Croat frequently appeared to recycle the ball and even helped out defensively, making two tackles.

Arturo Vidal – 6.5/10

Arturo Vidal was like the proverbial bull in a china store, sloppy in reckless and possession with his challenges. He seemed too eager to jump to tackles without timing them accurately.

Ashley Young – 7/10

Ashley Young was strong on the ball and demonstrated great positional awareness, but lost a couple of moves under pressure.

Lautaro Martinez – 8.5/10

Lautaro Martinez finished his barren streak of five games without a goalLautaro Martinez truly stepped up to the plate in the lack of Romelu Lukaku, scoring and assisting once target each, each of which was brilliant parts of implementation from him. His duel with Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos has been a joy to watch too.

Ivan Perisic – 7/10

After a quiet first half, Ivan Perisic came alive after the break, blending with Martinez for the equalizer.

Substitutes

Roberto Gagliardini – 6.5/10

Roberto Gagliardini replaced Barella and provided little in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Alexis Sanchez – 6/10

Alexis Sanchez did small after coming on and even wasted a nice free-kick by slamming it straight into the wall.

Radja Nainggolan – N/A

Radja Nainggolan came in the 89th minute and didn’t see much of the ball.

Real Madrid player ratings against Inter Milan:

Thibaut Courtois – 6.5/10

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ wait to get a Champions League blank sheet this season Persists Thibaut Courtois’ wait for a Champions League clean sheet this season continued after conceding twice in the match, although he was not at fault for the goal.

The Belgian, however, did come off his line a couple of times to make some important blocks and went in the books at the end for time-wasting.

Lucas Vazquez – 6.5/10

Lucas Vazquez’s attacking output was at a premium once again. He was likewise sound defensive, making some excellent clearances and feeding on the midfield with incisive passes.

Raphael Varane – 6.5/10

It was not the most memorable return to the Real Madrid line-up for Raphael Varane, who had been beaten to the ball by Perisic and Martinez several times. He also failed to block the latter’s goal-bound shot.

Sergio Ramos – 7/10

Not his very best performance, Sergio Ramos was powerful in possession as well as sprucing up his 100th attack for Los Blancos with a routine header.

Ferland Mendy – 7.5/10

Arguably the very best guardian for Real Madrid at the night, Ferland Mendy had Hakimi in check for most of the game and even impeded Barella’s moves with crucial blocks in the second half.

Federico Valverde – 6.5/10

This was a relatively quiet outing for Federico Valverde, who struggled to put himself to the match. He also missed a half-chance early and even blasted an attempt over the bar from the edge of the box. He was also booked for a late challenge on Barella.

Casemiro – 7/10

It was too difficult for Casemiro to keep up with the speed of this match on some events, while he misplaced several passes too. In addition, he conceded two free-kicks, the second of which was in a really good place for Inter, though Alexis Sanchez wasted it.

Toni Kroos – 7/10

Toni Kroos impressed with his work-rate and assaulting involvements, mixing nicely with Hazard and Benzema. He also assisted Ramos for Real Madrid’s second goal with a perfectly-weighted corner kick.

Marco Asensio – 6.5/10

Marco Asensio started the game brightly, linking up with Hazard as well as drawing a good save from Handanovic. But, his influence gradually waned, and that he was barely seen in the second half until his substitution at the 64th minute.

Karim Benzema – 7/10

Karim Benzema continued his upturn of form with a different goal, pouncing on Achraf Hakimi’s weak back pass to start Real Madrid’s account for the night. However, he soon drifted off prior to wasting a great chance at the final moments and forcing Handanovic into a save.

Eden Hazard was only sporadically promising. There were times when he took the game to the Nerazzurri with his pace on the ball and even teed up with Asensio to get an early chance. But he had been mostly quiet for the vast majority of the game.

Rodrygo – 7/10

Rodrygo didn’t do much but his goal was enough to make a massive impact because it assisted secure all three points for Real Madrid.

Vinicius Junior – 6.5/10

Vinicius Junior wasn’t involved in the game much but helped setup Rodrygo having a precise cross over the Inter defense.

Luka Modric – 6.5/10

The Croatian was called on for the final 15 minutes of the match in place of Toni Kroos and produced a possibility for Benzema right at the death.
