Who is the owner of Chennai Super Kings in 2020?
The Indian Premier League (IPL) giants Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is a Chennai, Tamil Nadu, based franchise cricket team founded in 2008. It was one of the original eight teams that took part in the inaugural IPL season. Chennai Super Kings is currently owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.
Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited Bio
The entity, Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited was formed on December 19, 2014, and acquired the team and the rights of the team from its parent company, India Cement. Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited has been registered as a non-governmental company. Apart from acquiring managerial and administrative roles for the franchise, the Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited also owns the rights to the team’s merchandise such as t-shirts, mugs, posters, footwear, wristbands, etc.
What was the need to form Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited?
The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) announced a franchise-based T20 domestic league in India (IPL) in 2007 and the Chennai-based franchise was bought by India Cements, an Indian cement manufacturing company, and acquired the rights to the franchise for 10 years. Former International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman N. Srinivasan was the owner of CSK, because of his position as the managing director and vice-chairman of India Cements Ltd.
A two-year IPL ban was handed to CSK starting July 2015 for the alleged involvement of their owners in the 2013 IPL match-fixing scandal. Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. Was then created and handed over the CSK franchisee as a clause in the BCCI’s constitution, which allowed board officials to have a commercial interest in the IPL and the Champions League Twenty20, was removed by the Supreme Court of India on 22 January 2015.
CSK have lifted the IPL trophy in 2010, 2011, and in 2018, which was their comeback season after the two-year ban. They have the highest win percentage (61.28) among all teams in the IPL. Also, they have won the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) in 2010 and 2014. CLT20 was an annual international twenty-over cricket competition held from 2009 to 2014, (now discontinued) played between the top domestic teams from major cricketing nations. CSK’s brand value in 2019 was estimated to be approximately ₹732 crores, which made them one of the most valuable IPL franchises.
