Hamilton Is Distinguished As A Knight By Queen Elizabeth

Lewis Hamilton became a seven-time Formula One champion this year. And now it can also be called “Sir”.

The pilot was knighted Wednesday, as part of the honor roll released by Queen Elizabeth, which recognizes artists, politicians, public servants, and others. In particular, this year’s honors went to those who worked in the fight against the coronavirus and its devastating impact.

Hamilton, who won his seventh F1 title last month to equal Michael Schumacher’s record, has said that part of his recent success was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. The 35-year-old driver dropped to one knee and used anti-racism slogans on his gear throughout the season.

“There was a different force than what had driven me in the past, ”Hamilton told the BBC last week. “I wanted to get to the end of the races first, to use that platform” against racism.

Some have suggested that Hamilton would have been knighted earlier, had it not been for his tax status. The honor was awarded to him in the overseas achievement section of the list, as he resides in Monaco, a low-tax country.

Hamilton’s tax issues hit the press in 2017 when the document leak known as Paradise Papers showed the pilot evaded paying more than $ 4 million in taxes on a private jet that was registered on the Isle of Man a tax haven.

David Richards, Chairman of the Board of Motorsport UK, said Hamilton’s tax status has been “totally misunderstood.” He added that the motorsport star is among the UK’s 5,000 biggest taxpayers.

The Queen’s honors are awarded twice a year, in December and June.
