Vengeance Day broadcasts on WWE Network, North American champion Johnny Gargano retained his title after a successful defense against Kushida. This was the second match featured during the show. Although in the beginning, Gargano was distracted because Dexter Lumis kidnapped Austin Theory, the leader of The Way resisted the constant keys of his rival. In the final minutes, Gargano pushed Kushida over the barricade and performed his One Final Beat move over the entrance ramp, and repeated it in the center of the ring for the victory on the count of three.

Thus, the founder of The Way continues his 70-day reign as North American Champion. At the NXT TakeOver WarGames 2020 event, Gargano managed to get in the way of the champion Leon Ruff and Damian Priest in a triple threat. With his victory on the night of December 6, 2020, Johnny Gargano became the first fighter to lift the North American Championship on three separate occasions.

After losing the North American Championship at TakeOver WarGames, Leon Ruff found a new partner in the form of Kushida. The latter quickly positioned himself against The Way and managed to iron the North American champion on several occasions. After making a backstage attack on Gargano, William Regal made the starting match between the two officials for the next big event for the yellow brand.
