In times of crisis, needs always arise and great opportunities are born. This is what has happened to the motorcycle market in Spain, which has managed to emerge practically unscathed and even reinforced from 2020 the cursed year of the coronavirus pandemic. While it has been a disastrous year for the automotive industry, with a 32.3% drop in sales and a loss of more than 400,000 registrations compared to 2019, the motorcycle market has managed to end the year with a slight drop of 9.2%, which translates into 183,496 motorcycles sold in Spain according to data from the National Association of Companies of the Two-Wheel Sector Anesdor.
Also, there is a very specific market that of mopeds which have increased its sales thanks to the needs arising from the pandemic and the economic crisis resulting from it. While motorcycle sales closed the year with a drop of 11.6%, reaching 155,298 deliveries, those of mopeds vehicles under 50 ccs grew by 12.1%, reaching a total of 21,393 units. The explanation is very simple the new urban mobility needs created by the pandemic and the fear of contagion from Covid-19 have boosted the sales of mopeds a safer alternative to public transport and much cheaper than the car.
Given the complex circumstances it has been a positive year for the sector: the year has been saved. The Covid-19 pandemic and especially, the closing of the market for two months in spring have caused a general decline in sales but the advantages for consumers in the market of the new mobility have allowed the sector to overcome the year with less negative figures than expected stressed the general secretary of Anesdor Jose Maria Riano. Compared to other sectors such as automotive, the result of the two-wheel market is even more favorable adds Riano, since it is the one with the best results at the end of 2020.
Honda: the brand that sells the most motorcycles honda was the brand that sold the most motorcycles in Spain during 2020. The Japanese manufacturer closed the year as the market leader after selling 28,264 units, 22.2% less than the previous year, according to Anesdor data. Yamaha, also Japanese, was second with deliveries of 22,571 units, 10.9% less, while the Taiwanese Kymco was third with 15,084 units, 19% less.
