Adam McKay, the Succession executive producer, famously stated to the cast that, on November 8, 2016, his election-night party was a disaster.
Succession set itself a challenging task by using the Murdoch family’s loose inspiration. In post-Trump America where politics are again front and center (and media is at the center), the show was intent on capturing the zeitgeist. It would have been a complete failure if it missed one inch.
The show has been able to rise to the occasion two seasons into its second season. Succession’s motley Machiavellian crew has been one of TV’s most impressive ensemble casts. It includes potential Roy heirs as well as their hangers-on. All critics agree that Succession’s cast is excellent.
HBO appears to agree. After just two episodes of its first season had aired on premium cable, the third season was approved by HBO. Succession fans could not be happier. This is what we know so far about the show’s third season.
HBO released a short clip from season three.
The new video promotes HBO’s newest shows. However, observant viewers can see a few seconds from Succession season 3. Logan Roy (Brian Cox), a pilot on a private aircraft, shouts, “It is war!” Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy) also appears in the clip, saying, “This video is amazing!” Siobhan Roy, Sarah Snook) makes an appearance.

Season three might be the show’s second to last.
While Succession fans would love for the show’s final season, Georgia Pritchett (executive producer) recently revealed that there is a near-term end. Pritchett stated that fans can only look forward to one or two more seasons of the series, although the exact date is still unknown.
Pritchett, British outlet The Times, stated, “I think the maximum would have five seasons, although possibly more like four.”
She also pointed out that Jesse Armstrong, the showrunner of the series, is already plotting how to finish it. Pritchett explained that we are at the end of filming season 3. “Armstrong is only saying one more.” Pritchett suggested Armstrong could remain for a fifth season. She noted that showrunners sometimes stay on a season longer than originally planned, which she said: “happens every single time.”
When the show does come to an end, the team prepares for the finale. Pritchett said that Succession’s crew has “a good finish insight”.
Alexander Skarsgard and Adrien Brody are joining the cast.
Skarsgard, who is well-known for True Blood and Big Little Lies was a regular role in Succession. Skarsgard is set to play Lukas Mattsson, a “confrontational and successful” tech founder and CEO. “
After earning an Emmy nomination for his role in Big Little Lies Skarsgard has returned to HBO. He was a co-star in Nicole Kidman’s role as her abusive, violent husband.
Skarsgard isn’t the only cast member who will be joining season 3. Adrien Brody, Oscar-winner will star as a guest star. He is slated to portray Josh Aaronson as a billionaire activist investor, who plays a pivotal role in the struggle for Waystar’s ownership. Waystar is the Roy family’s media and hospitality empire.
Brody and Skarsgard are not the only actors who have joined the Succession cast. Hope Davis was cast as Sandi Furness, the daughter of Logan’s rival Sandy Furness. Linda Emond will portray Michelle-Anne Vanderhoven and Jihae Berry Schneider will play the lead public relations consultant.
The new season could premiere in late 2021.
Deadline spoke with Casey Bloys who is a chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max. He said that in a normal world, they would be aiming to release the fourth quarter later this year. He said that it would mean they didn’t face any COVID delays. “How the vaccine rolls out and how important COVID is will play a big part in that. It’s still very much a reality at the moment. We hope it becomes easier to deal with. It’s difficult right now to predict.
Production was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
HBO announced the show’s cancellation in mid-March. The show was still in preproduction. Variety was told by Jesse Armstrong, showrunner, that they have tentative plans to shoot before Christmas 2020. But it is not a certain bet. Although they “try to think about starting shooting New York before Christmas”, the plans are still “just discussions.” He stated, “Who knows if it’ll happen, but that’s what the plan is at the moment.”
Production was resumed in New York in January 2020. Deadline reported that Bloys said the team had considered filming on Los Angeles, but ultimately preferred the East Coast. “At one time, we thought that we should film Succession Los Angeles because Los Angeles looked safer than New York. Then Los Angles looked terrible and New York looked much better,” Bloys said.
In March 2021 Nicholas Braun (aka Cousin Greg) posted an Instagram photo that seemed to give a hint about what was to come.
Braun was posing in a suit before a Waystar Royco sign and wrote cryptically: “I am an employee of that company. That’s all that I can say about that!”
Cox says he’s the only actor who knows what happens this season.
“I nearly fell from my chair because Armstrong never tells us about the next series. Cox started to we didn’t know what would happen from episode one to episode two. He said that he first told Armstrong that he wouldn’t like to find out. “But then he said it to me. It’s thrilling and jolly. That’s all I can do. Cox added that cast members will never, ever, never, ever know what Cox is talking about until they start [production].
It’s unclear if the pandemic will be featured on the show.
While the show’s viewers are used to seeing news stories that are not in the headlines, the question remains as to whether or not the ongoing pandemic is addressed. Sarah Snook (Succession’s Shiva) that Armstrong may write about the coronavirus epidemic in the upcoming season. He “wants it to be delicate and classy.”
She stated, “It is something everyone is aware of, and audiences these days are very intuitive.” Even seeing a mask or hand sanitizer in the background, all these things are part of our everyday lives. We want the Roys to do the things they love and not turn towards a story about a pandemic.
The cast and creators have dropped some hints about what’s to come.
Lucy Prebble, the Succession writer, said to Deadline in November it was still early days in terms of storylining, but they were already working towards season three. Prebble stated that there are many discussions about expanding internationally. It has to do with the relationship between international media and countries. “The way that international countries influence, control, and fund media in ways that aren’t being talked about as clearly is the way they do it. “
Brian Cox (the actor behind Succession’s media magnate-slash–terrible father Logan Roy) confirmed earlier that Logan was smirking as he watched Kendall turn on him. Logan knows that the boy has grown up. He’s taking positive action.
Cox stated, “Logan has always known Kendall was a treacherous fool. He’s not judging him. There is some validation of what has happened. Logan accepts that.”
Where will the father-son relationship go? Cox assured that Logan and Kendall would be seeing “a lot more fireworks”–and possibly even another Logan’s child. Cox said, “I’m fascinated by how young Roman comes into action.” “He displayed his strength after season tw0. He is the hidden gun beneath the table.
HBO announced the series was renewed in August 2019.

The release date isn’t set in stone.
