The Last Kingdom Season 4 finally dropped on Netflix over the weekend, that means there has been time to binge throughout the 10 new episodes. Oh yes, we all spent our Sunday watching the fantastic Uhtred of Babbenburg (Alexander Dreymon) fight his way through enemies that are new, and we want more. The question is…will Netflix create The Last Kingdom Season 5?
The Last Kingdom is an epic Dark Age saga set during one of the most turbulent times in British history: the reign of Alfred the Great and the generations later. During this time, England was divided into some rival kingdoms, some lead by indigenous Christian Saxons and many others by invading Danes, aka Vikings. The Last Kingdom looks at this fraught minute through the eyes of a Saxon nobleman named Uhtred of Bamburgh. As a boy, he had been”adopted” by Danish invaders and has become a man who is torn between the 2 cultures.
The first season of The Last Kingdom aired stateside on BBC America. Season 2 became a co-production of the BBC and Netflix, and when the BBC declined to renew it, Netflix took over as sole producer. So Netflix believes the show appeals to its subscribers, but does Netflix enjoy the show enough to renew it for the fifth season? Here’s what we know so far about The Last Kingdom Season 5 on Netflix.
Is Netflix Making The Last Kingdom Season 5?
As of July 7, 2020, we can confirm that YES, there will be a fifth season of The Last Kingdom. The news was declared via a cute YouTube video showing star Alexander Dreymon calling the cast of The Last Kingdom up on video discussion to share the news.
“TLK was picked up for another season,” Dreymon informed the over-the-moon exciting cast.
Eliza Butterworth who plays with the dowager queen Aelswith joked, “The party bus is rolling! The party bus is rolling!”
“Thank Netflix and our fans for this,” Dreymon told his throw friends.
Now what is interesting is that was on the telephone and who was not. Series lead Millie Brady who plays with the Lady Aethelflaed wasn’t in the movie, but also the likes of Ruby Hartley, who plays Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra, Stefanie Martini, who plays Eadith, as well as Magnus Bruun, who plays with Cnut, were online. What does it mean?
The only person on the telephone they left a notice wouldn’t be back for The Last Kingdom Season 5 was Magnus Bruun, whose character was killed last season. Meaning Eliza Butterworth’s Aelswith could pull her poisoning and Stiorra may not be off with Sigtryggr forever. While we should not read too much to the actors’ availability, Uhtred broke it off with Aethelflaed at the end of The Last Kingdom Season 4. From the novels, his next flame would be Eadith…although she appears to possess some kind of flirtation going on with his very best friend in the series. Hmm…
When Will The Last Kingdom Season 5 Hit Netflix?
If Netflix does order a fifth season of The Last Kingdom, it will probably take about 18 months to generate a new season. That’s going off how long it took Netflix to earn The Last Kingdom Seasons 3 & 4. Meaning that you could expect The Last Kingdom Season 5 in November or December of 2021. Production may be delayed because…looks around at the country of the world…but Holiday Season 2021 seems just like a good bet.
